Flavor

Described as a rich, sweet, low-acid taste that leans fruity, often called one of the best of the yellow beefsteaks. As with every flavor note here, this is the recurring catalog and grower description, not a measured claim.

Origin

Originally called Hot Yellow and grown by Dr. John Wyche, a Cherokee dentist and circus owner in Hugo, Oklahoma, who fertilized with elephant manure; seeds passed to John Green in 1985 and to Craig LeHoullier in 1992, who renamed and released it in Wyche's honor.

What it does well

  • Large golden beefsteak fruit with rich flavor
  • Heavy, reliable yields for a big heirloom

Where it frustrates

  • Needs more water than the average tomato
  • Prone to catfacing and needs strong support for 4 to 6 foot vines
