Flavor

Described as sweeter than most beefsteaks while still carrying a deep true tomato taste, juicy and rich. As with every flavor note here, this is the recurring catalog and grower description, not a measured claim.

Origin

A West Virginia heirloom preserved by Darrell Kellogg of Redford, Michigan, a railroad supervisor and seed saver, who received the seed from a friend; introduced to the Seed Savers Exchange in 1993.

What it does well

  • Large, heavy orange beefsteak fruit
  • Heavy and continuous yield for an heirloom
  • Sweet flavor with classic tomato depth

Where it frustrates

  • Needs a long season and tall, sturdy support up to 6 to 10 feet
  • Mid to late season, slow to ripen
  • Susceptible to the usual tomato diseases and pests
